Cherries are a multifaceted but perhaps understated fruit. 

There are meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials showing tart cherries are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

It’s cherry season here in the PNW! Cherries are a multifaceted but perhaps understated fruit. There are meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials showing tart cherries are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. They have been shown to significantly reduce C reactive protein and TNF Alpha, both important key players in the inflammation pathways. At isolated concentrations the anthocyanins (antioxidant compound in cherries also responsible for the beautiful red pigment color of cherries) have been shown to have comparable inhibitions of COX-1 & COX-2 with ibuprofen ( a key inflammatory pathway targeted). Anthocyanins are also found in beets, black currants, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, açaí, and pomegranates. That is quite an interesting point to think about , a fruit shown to be comparable to a long-time household resident in the bathroom medicine cabinet.Nature has so many of these fun facts, I love to continue to learn about them more and more. Cherries have also been found to be good for muscle recovery and exercise, there are meta-analyses showing beneficial effects including reduced muscle soreness and a moderate effect on recovery of muscular strength and power. Cherries are also a natural source of Vitamin C, fiber, and melatonin! Melatonin actually has antioxidant properties beyond its well known sleep role. Cherries are delicious fresh straight off the tree, like in my front yard! 🍓 It’s Strawberry season! 1) Did you know that strawberry leaves have a long history in traditional and herbal medicine use and have some surprising health benefits? Not just a strawberry, the fruit we all know and love, but strawberry leaves! They are surprisingly rich in bioactive compounds. Strawberry leaves contain polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, and trace minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and manganese. The most evidence supported potential benefits are anti-oxidant and anti inflammatory effects, mild digestive support, cardiovascular support, and possible blood sugar support. They help neutralize oxidative stress and may reduce damaging inflammatory signaling in the body. They offer mild digestive support due to their tannin content, which has an astringent effect on the gut lining. It is also thought that the flavonoids in strawberry leaves may help cardiovascular support by supporting endothelial blood vessel function, reducing oxidative damage to blood vessels, and improving nitric oxide signaling. 🌎For a little fun history context, strawberries were traditionally used in European and indigenous herbal plant medicine for joint pain, a spring tonic, digestion, and inflammatory support. ☕️ Try fresh or dried strawberry leaves in a tea steeped for about 5 or 10 minutes. You could even combine it with other fun herbal tea ingredients, such as lemon balm, mint, hibiscus, or even ginger and lemon! Featured , my freshly picked late spring strawberries from my garden! Living here in the PNW makes that evident — always a welcome reminder, in every season. Oregon has a way of making it visible — flower fields in full late summer color, strawberries ripening under Mt Hood & Mt Adams, vineyards that have learned to work with the land rather than against it. We’re just coming into the season when all of this starts again. The fields waking up, the farmers markets filling out, the long evenings that make you want to cook something worth sitting down to. There’s something quietly optimistic about an Oregon summer — the way the whole region leans toward abundance. I’m already looking forward to what this one brings. In many places, food is still deeply connected to seasonality, community, rhythm, and presence. Not optimized. Not rushed. Not reduced to numbers on a label. That perspective stayed with me. Because culinary medicine isn’t only about nutrients and lab values. It’s also about behavior, environment, culture, memory, and the realities of how people actually live.
